Baby Elephants Recycle Christmas Trees

This was too sweet not to share. Matt found this on Slog. According to National Geographic, each elephant in Germany will have a treat of 5 recycled Christmas trees to munch on – apparently it helps with their digestion!

We are spreading the branches of ours under the hay on the beds that are designated for raspberries and blueberries, as soil treatment.
But that does sound like fun!
Thats a great picture! Philadelphia doesn’t offer curbside recycling of Christmas trees but they set up a couple drop off spots. I think they are going to be turned into mulch.
I was at the Oklahoma City Zoo over the weekend and had the pleasure of watching the animals enjoy their Christmas trees. :) The porcupine had reduced his to splinters (and loved every minute of it, I’m sure!) and the black bear was lying languidly on his back, grabbing the branches, bending them back, and letting them go, just to watch them sproing back again. A great way to utilize trees tossed to the curb!
You’re right. That is too wonderful not to share. Thank you.
I give mine to my sheep…I don’t know about their digestion but it gives them a nice wintertime diversion.
How adorable!
risa b, Great idea!
N., Several years ago, Seattle started with a dropoff recycling program. Eventually it has turned into full on curbside recycling. So there’s hope. Maybe they need a little nudge from some residents like you. ; )
Kelsie, That would be so awesome to see! Wow! Brings a smile to my face just envisioning it.
Katrina, My pleasure.
Tameson, Ha! I had no idea it was a thing, to give animals trees!
Jill S, Indeed!

Chrissy, I wonder if you have a municipal compost station? We do here in Seattle… you can just take stuff right in, and dump it off at the clean green station, which at the same location as the local dump.
