My family has made hot buttered rum over the holidays for as long as I can remember. You know, from that dried stuff called “Hot Buttered Rum Mix” at the liquor store? Well, until this year, that is! Matt and I perused the internet and created a wonderful recipe that is so much better than store-bought mix. Plus, much like homemade cranberry sauce, this recipe is incredibly easy!
Enjoy this drink that warms the tummy and soothes the soul…
Easy Homemade Hot Buttered Rum
- 3 C Water
- 1 Cinnamon Stick
- 1/8 t Ground Nutmeg
- 20 Cloves
- 1/4 C Brown Sugar (or 1/8 C white sugar and 1/8 C maple syrup)
- 1.5 T Butter
- 1 Pinch Salt
- 3 oz Rum (dark is better, but light works as well)
1. Cook all of the ingredients except the rum together in a pan. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 10-30 minutes (cooking longer will increase the flavor). Taste and add extra sugar if desired.
2. Remove from heat and add rum, stirring. Allow to sit for 2-3 minutes so that flavors come together fully. Serve in mugs.
Makes 3 delicious cups.
