VIDEO!! Gardening 101: How To Hand-Pollinate Tomatoes & Peppers
Allright, y’all – had a few glitches so it’s not Thursday as promised, but I’m hoping you’ll forgive me. And also go easy on me? Normally I have a whole crew working with me, but this film was directed, produced, filmed (except for the shot where I handed the camera to my mom – go mom!), audio recorded, and edited by yours truly. We made this film yesterday.
So, now we know! What a great video, I can’t believe you put it together so nicely in one day. I especially like the “One Green Generation” symbol at the beginning. I’ll be sure to remember that, shake or flick. ;)
Now, Melinda, you know you need background music for that video!
Shake Shake Shake! Shake Shake Shake! Shake your tomato!
My neighbors are so gonna appreciate me out their boogeying with the tomaters!
They already talk when I am out there having sex with the squashes!
Super video! I think you chose a good topic too. It’s was always a job that I was given as a child in the garden, but as I think about it, not something that comes up regularly in the gardening books.
Now that was fun. No reason we should be hearing from you, seeing you in the medium that is your bread and butter. It is well and truly first in a series. Video Saturday?
Nice job, Melinda! I like that you chose an easy topic for your first video and that’s great that your mom helped you out, too. The garden looks so lush, too.
Glad you liked it, all!! Thanks for your supportive comments! It takes a whole lot longer than writing a post, so I’ll have to figure out how to work it in regularly – but I will. Also, interestingly, not very many readers are watching the video – I had no idea that would happen. Very curious! Maybe that will change as it becomes a regular thing.
Anyone know of a good place to share podcasts, btw?
Oh my goodness, you two are so cute and the garden is gorgeous. You’ve inspired me that if we’re still in the condo next year we have to grow roof top tomatoes. The roof is on top of the neighbors though which means we’ll have to grow extra for them too.
I’m going to shake my tomatillas tonight. They have lots of flowers, no fruit. I hope this helps.
I’m sorry this is so late. My daughter was sick, then my wife and then me. During that time, I forgot to post. Sorry. We have some great posts this month and I’ll let them speak for themselfes this month.

I am contiplating growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, and I’m sure glad to see how to pollinate my tomatoes. Thanks for the info it was very informative and will help alot. Good gardening!
Thanks for the great information! I’m new to gardening and have my square foot garden in my screened in pool area, so no bees. I’ve been wondering how exactly to do hand pollination and I’ve read about it but seeing your video was very helpful.
Thanks again!
Thank you for the awesome video! We always grow a LARGE garden in the summer, and this year have a new window we can grow peppers in over the winter. We were wondering how/ if we needed to pollinate them. So again, thanks! We have been flicking our pepper flowers while watching pretty white snow out the window up here in the great white north. If all goes well, we may add tomaotes to the window mix. Merry Christmas!
Jamie, good luck with your winter garden. Peppers and tomatoes are technically perennials in warmer climates. Last year I brought a pepper plant inside, and it lasted through the winter to produce peppers outdoors the following spring. Theoretically, it could last many years this way by just bringing it indoors during winter!

I love it! I am so going outside and shaking up all my tomato plants right now.
That was a great video. You and your mom are awesome :D
That was great! You definitely should do more of them, if it’s not too much trouble and it looks like it was fun to make. Way to go!
