It was a year ago. I was driving down the street, and I saw them – were they wild dogs? I slowed… then the car behind me slowed as well… they… they were goats! Wow!
I was fascinated – they were alone, under some trees, behind a hastily put-up fence. Two days later, I’d just returned home and was checking my RSS feeds. On the Slog newswire was a headline “Goats in Capitol Hill!”
I grabbed my camera and whisked off – it was nearly dark, and this was something that must be captured!
Amazing. On a hill between the dog park and the freeway, were a whole bunch of happily munching goats! There were many people looking on, taking cell phone photos, laughing, and enjoying the bizarre sight. A community-building moment to be sure.
I learned later that the city rents them – I’ve seen them in other parts of town since. One of those fun little sustainability sights in the city!
Have a lovely Friday, everyone.

This was a moment to capture!
I really think this is a great idea. Thanks for sharing. I love goats.
Well I got an email blast from yardiac in April (2nd) with the header “Buy a goat and never mow your lawn again” and I was sure it was an April Fool’s joke – now i’m not so sure…
What a great idea. I’ve heard of people renting their goats out to others to clear brush, etc. yet have not actually ’seen’ it in practice.
Thank you for getting some pictures!
So they rent them to graze instead of mowing? Wow I like the concept.
This is great! We say a herd of them a couple weeks ago driving over to the East Bay, along the freeway. A much better way to keep the weeds down! :)
City of Burien does this as well as does Boeing and the Sea Tac airport! No heavy equiptment. Just happy happy goats eating to their hearts content! Genius!
Great little brush-eaters! We met some folks in rural Oregon that told us they rented out their goats for this too.
How cool is that?! I love that!
Thank goodness someone is using their nut and making sensible decisions.
How wonderful.
I heard about a project recently over here trialling the use of goats for fire – fuel reduction projects in some of our council run bushland areas. It will be very interesting to see what ultimately happens with the project as goats tend to be quite indiscriminate browsers so may end up being deemed too destructive in some of these quite fragile ecosystems but from my pov I love the fact it is being at least trialled.
Kind Regards
Belinda
Glad you all liked them!
Yes, Tree, they rent them instead of using a team of people and machines to extract the various weeds and invasive blackberries. Belinda, very interesting – I’ve heard of using grazing as a way to clear the brush in fire danger zones. I’d be interested to hear more when they learn if it works!
I love hearing things like this. I am on Craigslist quite regularly here in Portland Oregon and occassionally I see people offering to rent their goats to people to clean up their yards. Love it!
